About the Finnish language
Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside Finland. It is one of the two official languages of Finland and an official minority language in Sweden. Finnish is also recognised as a minority language in Russia. In Sweden, both standard Finnish and Meänkieli, a Finnish dialect, are spoken.
Finnish is a member of the Finno-Ugric language family and is typologically between fusional and agglutinative languages. It modifies and inflects nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals and verbs, depending on their roles in the sentence. Modern Finnish has been estimated to have approximately one million native speakers, which makes it the ninth most spoken language in Europe.
Finnish is a member of the Uralic family of languages and is closely related to Estonian, with some mutual intelligibility. The Sami languages are also part of this family. Finnish has two main dialects: Western and Eastern. Standard Finnish is based on Western dialects and is used in education, media, and government.
Finnish is written with the Latin alphabet, supplemented with vowels ä, ö and y. Historically, Finnish was also written using the Swedish alphabet. The main sounds of the language are vowels (sixteen), consonants (thirteen) and diphthongs (eleven). Its complex system of case endings marks the grammatical roles of nouns and other words. In addition to native Finnish terms, the Finnish language includes loanwords from languages like German and Russian. Moreover, there are numerous regional dialects spoken in Finland.
Finnish is one of the most phonetically regular languages, meaning it is relatively easy to learn. It also has a straightforward grammar structure and does not require learners to memorise grammatical gender. Finnish is an analytic language and does not have articles or complex verb conjugations. Furthermore, its words are relatively short compared to other European languages.
