About the Kazakh language
Kazakh is the official language of Kazakhstan and one of its two languages of official status (along with Russian). It is a member of the Turkic language family and is related closely to other Turkic languages such as Kyrgyz, Tatar, Uzbek, and Karakalpak. Kazakh has been strongly influenced by both Russian and Arabic throughout its history. The language is written in Cyrillic script and uses a modified version of the Arabic alphabet.
Kazakh has five dialects, further divided into two distinct groups: Northern Kazakh and Southern Kazakh. Northern Kazakh is spoken in the northern parts of Kazakhstan and in parts of Russia, China, and Mongolia; Southern Kazakh is spoken mainly in South Kazakhstan. The significant difference between these two dialects is in pronouncing certain sounds.
Kazakh has around 10 million native speakers and is widely used as a language of instruction in schools throughout Kazakhstan. It is also spoken by many people from other countries who have come to live in Kazakhstan, including Russians, Ukrainians, Uzbeks, Tatars, Koreans and other ethnic minorities.
Kazakh has a rich literary tradition that dates back to the 18th century. The language has two primary written forms, the old version and the new version known as “Modern Kazakh”. Modern Kazakh uses a modified Cyrillic script which includes additional letters that represent some of the sounds unique to the language.
While Kazakh is the official language of Kazakhstan, it is also widely spoken in neighbouring countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and China. It is also becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to its use in various media outlets such as radio, television and films. In 2020, Kazakh was added to the list of languages available on Google Translate. This has helped to increase its visibility and promote the language internationally.
