Have you ever wondered what would happen if you took the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song, translated the lyrics into the world’s most spoken languages using Google Translate and then translated them back into English?
Of course not! You are either way too busy or way too sensible to involve yourself in such nonsense.
Luckily for us though, the good people at CDZA Music have loads of time on their hands and love a bit of nonsense….
…and below you will see the results of their labour. Have a quick watch; if you’re of my generation then you’ll be singing along in no time as these lyrics must be imprinted on the brains of anyone waching pop TV in the early 90s.
This little excercise, apart from being a lot of fun, also leaves users of free translation tools like Google Translate, Bing and BabelFish with two key lessons:
1) Free translation tools can be OK, but can also leave you with a load of gibberish – where did “apricot” keep coming from in the video?
2) If you are using a free tool, do what they did in the video and conduct a “back-translation” to check levels of accuracy. The video clearly shows that the original translations into Chinese, Spanish, Bengali and others couldn’t have been that hot.
In short – use with caution.
