Who says the world’s in a crisis? The translation software and machine translation market definitely doesn’t seem to be! This booming market is expected to grow to $7 billion by 2019. Why?

As internationalization becomes a worldwide trend, it’s no wonder that the translation software market is on the rise. More and more companies have expanded their business views to encompass a global perspective, i.e. they are going global. To successfully reach world domination, localization is a necessary feature. According to a report on website Companies and Markets the driving forces behind the translation market are connected to the internet, with the smartphone as its latest sweetheart: now, almost every company out there aims to have a user friendly website for each of their separate markets.

Enterprises that operate in the global market are usually present in 80-170 different countries. And the IT market hasn’t been sitting still either: recently, major shifts have been apparent in the market that now also encompasses cloud business solutions and social media. Moreover, IT departments are being replaced by lines of business – decisions are made by employing visual feature and discovery decision tablets, for example.

Companies use language translation to derive information and opinions about their products from the social media, which can then be used in decision-making. To enable discovery features to be used, language translation is needed. These systems of engagement find institutional and social media knowledge and make it more widely available. Afterwards, the solutions that can be derived from this are globally applicable.

Translation company Lionbridge clearly shows that the translation industry is a booming business. The company has 52,000 separate client translation memories and employs over 14,000 translators to cater for the needs of over 700 clients. Lionbridge has a software brand platform called Freeway™ that supports large, brand projects created on the web to aid their clients. The platform is updated regularly to make sure its 2,000 users have 99.9 per cent uptime.

There are two main types of machine translation: statistical and rule based machine translation.

Statistical machine translations

Take statistical techniques and apply these to language data. These systems learn from the several translations they carry out and use language knowledge such as linguistic rules and the grammatical structure of languages to carry out translations.

Rule-based machine translation

On the other hand, translates more like a human translator would do: it carries out translations based on rules that are defined by the user, who can iteratively implement them. This means the accuracy of the translation improves with every translation.

Hybrid machine translation

Systems combine these two types of machine translation and has proven to be far more accurate than translation created by using only one of these types of translation. Now that is has proven to create very accurate translations, this new form of machine translation is a major shift in the translation industry.

On the website cited above the entire report can be purchased. Among other things, the study sheds lights upon the market trends of the translation industry and related industries, gives a market share analysis and provides the reader with in-depth interviews with leading names in the market segment.

It’s not free though!
