Malaysian Education Ministry Needs New Approach To Enhance English Language
The Ministry of Education needs to think of new methods to enhance English language use among students of primary and secondary schools and teachers’ institutes as the present teaching methods were no longer suitable.
The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) is of the opinion that to be successful the ministry needed to give importance to strengthening grammar and pronunciation.
Its president Hashim Adnan said NUTP proposed that the ministry set up a English laboratory which would be a language centre for students and also teachers.
Such a laboratory would help students and teachers learn, he told reporters after attending a seminar on “The Teaching and Learning of The English Language in Schools” organised by the union here Tuesday.
He said beside setting up the language laboratory, the seminar also proposed that the government produce a compact disc that contained communication teaching to make learning easier.
“This will enhane the skills and confidence of students,” said Hashim.
He said beside that the teachers of English needed to be assessed by their heads on teaching methods as that way the schoold would have their own strategies to enhance the effectiveness of English language use in schools.
“We also resolved a suggestion that the ministry make the English language subject a compulsory pass subject at the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level,” he said.
Seventy five Englsih language teachers who on average had more than 20 years experience teaching the language participated in the two-day seminar.
