Linguistic abilities built through conversations
The linguistic abilities of young state and independent school pupils can be improved through conversations with parents, it has been claimed.
Discussing texts – as well as visually digesting them – is a key tactic to deploy when educating kids, FiveDads.com stated. One of the site’s co-founders Scott Paton explained: “I never just read a story and walk away from my children. There’s always the conversation about: What happens next? What did you think of that character?”
He was commenting following the publication of new research about the importance of conversations during language learning. The study, which was included in a recent issue of Pediatrics, urged mothers and fathers to engage in two-way talks about books and stories.
Additional benefits of engaging in this type of activity include the strengthening of parental relationships, according to the National Literacy Trust. The organisation claims employment opportunities are more plentiful for those who relish reading at a young age.
