The launch of Living Cultural Storybases in Timbuktu - an evening of storytelling in local languages
Stories are the essence of every culture. By telling stories in the local language, traditional knowledge, values and cultural identity are transmitted across the generations. LCS is a non-profit organisation, aiming to reconnect the generations and those people now living in cities, using new digital media for sharing spoken stories across the world. Our pilot project around Timbuktu with the Tuareg peoples - the nomadic Kel Tamacheq culture- was proudly launched in December 2007. This 9min. video shows extracts from a public evening of storytelling by master storytellers in two local languages, translated into both English and French, accompanied by traditional music. The event was attended by dignitories, tourists and ordinary townsfolk alike, advertised through the local radio stations. Celebrated by all, our LCS project launch was 'the talk of the town' for sometime afterwards. This evening marked the first public performance of storytellers for centuries in this famed town and old centre of learning. As the ancient Sudanese proverb puts it: "Salt comes from the North, gold from the South, money from the white mans country, but the word of God, holy things and fine legends are only found in Timbuktu".For more information, see http://www.storybases.org or (in French) http://storybases-tamacheq.blogspot.com
