Immersion programs advance languages, culture, and academics
Dual Immersion Programs in Granite School DistrictWhat is Dual Immersion?Students learn academic content through a second language. The focus is on proficiency; on being able to use the language in multiple meaningful contexts. What are the goals of Dual Immersion?•Academic achievement across all subject areas•Proficiency in English and the immersion language (Chinese, Spanish or French)•Enhanced inter-cultural understanding•Access to the educational, cognitive, socio-cultural and economic benefits of being bilingual and bi-literate•Preparation of students for their responsibilities as global citizens of the 21 centuryWhat are the different models present in Granite School District? There are two program models. The makeup of the class determines which model is used. •In a one-way immersion program the class consists primarily of English language speakers. William Penn, Diamond Ridge, Calvin Smith and Spring Lane are all one-way immersion programs.•In a two-way immersion program the population consists of English and at least 30% of the target language speakers. Vista and West Kearns are two-way Spanish immersion programs. In addition, West Kearns is a Gifted and Talented Magnet program. There are two teacher models. In both models students receive 50% of their core content instruction in English and 50% of their content in the target language. There is a clear and consistent separation of the languages during instruction. •In a one-teacher model, the teacher is fluent in both English and the target language. The teacher splits the day into English time and target language time. S/he has a clear indication for the students when they are switching between the language times. West Kearns uses this model.•In a two-teacher model, a fluent English speaking teacher partners with a fluent target language teacher and they split the content between the two languages. William Penn, Diamond Ridge, Calvin Smith, Spring Lane and Vista use this model. What does Dual Immersion look like in a classroom? The content subjects are divided so that English language arts (reading, writing, and spelling) and Science are taught in English while Math, Social Studies and Literacy in the target language will be taught in that target language. Music, Art, P.E. & Health are offered in both languages. The target language teacher speaks only in that target language. S/he communicates using a range of engaging strategies including: pictures, songs, chants, games, body language, expressions, pantomime, drama, etc.•The students progress is carefully monitored in this program through multiple forms of assessment. Both performance in core content areas and English and the target language acquisition are carefully monitored.
