African Queen: What Not To Do
AFRICAN QUEEN: WHAT NOT TO DOTaken from the classic movie, African Queen, this humorous clip illustrates the sad truth of what has, too often, happened in cross-cultural contexts. The well-meaning missionaries have managed to gather the African people into their new Methodist Church, but are not successful in gaining the engagement of the people with the sound of their organ and their arm-waving leadership. Contrast this to the river boat captain who has learned their culture and is fully engaged within it. He loves their ways and their music and, as a result, has a much different basis of relationship with them.It is not our place to export our cultural forms into other cultures. Rather, the use of one's own language and musical forms in the creation of worship songs will always remain the best heart expression of their faith. WITH APPRECIATION TO THE FILMAKERS FOR THE EDUCATIONAL USE OF THIS CLIP. HEART SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL.www.heart-sounds.org
