As from October 2008, Sussex University will be running a BSL / English Interpreter Programme.
This programme will be aimed at individuals who are hoping to pursue BSL / English Interpreting as a career. Individuals should already have gained accreditation in BSL prior to applying for the course. This course would be particularly valuable for someone who is already working studying as a Junior Trainee Sign Language Interpreter.
The following modules will fall under the umbrella of the BSL / English Interpreting course:
The Interpreting Self
The Interpreting self helps to equip students with an understanding of the dynamics which take place within an interpreting assignment and the role and function of the BSL / English Interpreter during this transaction. Students will also use this module as opportunity to establish their current level of understanding and areas of knowledge within the BSL / English Interpreting field that they still need to develop.
Language and Translation
This module will help to equip students with a detailed understanding of the linguistics underlying the English language and BSL. It will then help students to understand the way in which these linguistic bases influence the BSL / English interpreting settings.
Interpreting Theory and Practice One
This module is the first in two modules which help individuals to gain a full understanding of the English language and the way in which it has been shaped by history, linguistics and culture. Students will also begin gaining an understanding of the simultaneous BSL / English interpreting setting.
Interpreting Theory and Practice 2
The above module will continue into year two whereby focus will shift towards the application of theoretical knowledge, competency in practice and the exploration of an ethical framework.
The Reflective Professional Interpreter 1
The final module will include oversight of the dynamics of different settings and work placements.
The BSL / English Interpreting course is certainly a great opportunity for anybody who wishes to enter the fast moving and exciting world of the BSL interpreter.
