All British Sign Language Interpreters who are registered by the Independent Registration Panel are obligated to adhere to a prescribed Code of Practice which is outlined by the Code of Ethics and the Guidelines for Professional Practice.

Complaints in respect to a registered British Sign Language Interpreter can be made to the Independent Registration Panel at any time if is felt that a British Sign Language Interpreter has contravened either the Code of Ethics stipulations or, the Guidelines for Professional Practice.

Code of Ethics:

The Code of Ethics outlines 6 ethical principles which should be followed by registered British Sign Language Interpreters when carrying out an assignment. The principles relate primarily to the impact of British Sign Language Interpreters on others when carrying out an interpreting assignment

These 6 ethical outlines in turn provide the foundations for the Guidelines for Professional practice. The principles are as follows:

The British Sign Language Interpreter shall:

  • Do no harm
  • Be honest
  • Keep his / her word
  • Act justly and fairly
  • Respect the personal choices made by another and;
  • Strive to do good
